Pre-Interview Advice

April 24, 2024

Coastal Partners typically sends out a ‘pre-call notes’ e-mail to candidates before they have their first round interview with a firm.

These tips are helpful for anyone preparing for their next interview. Some of this may seem obvious, yet it’s amazing how often the obvious is overlooked in interviews

Sharing some of the tips we include here:

Communicate With Clarity and Confidence

  • Bring the energy: People want to speak to someone who is enthusiastic about their work and excited about the potential of joining their team.

  • Be concise: focus on answering the question asked. Try to keep your answers clear and to the point. Fact based answers are better than generalities.

Show Up Prepared and Curious

  • Don’t be modest & don’t be arrogant - find the sweet spot between the two. If you’ve been promoted quickly, hired away by a client / former manager, or recognized for your achievements in some way - bring it up! Let them know you’re a high achiever, but do it with facts & examples vs. telling them you’re the best without being able to point to why.

  • Express genuine interest: Make it clear why this firm and role are exactly what you're seeking.

Follow Through Like a Pro

  • Research the firm you are interviewing with to show that you've done your homework and know who they are. Ask questions that show you’ve spent time thinking about their company.

  • Send a thank you note or follow-up after the call. Arrive on time to the call. Dress appropriately.

We hope these tips are helpful for anyone preparing for their next interview. Good luck!
